Historic Performance for Track
Team
February 13, 2012
The
track team picked up right where it left off last May with another
finish that was the best in school history - this time at the Manhattan
Championships for varsity indoor track. Three new champions were
crowned: Josephine Watson in the 300 meters, Steven Shaw in the long
jump and triple jump,
and Lukas Chaya in the 600 and 300 meters. Secondly, new
school records were set: Anais Perrine in the pole vault, Lukas Chaya
in the 600 and 300, Jem Cuffee in the high hurdles, and Laura
Nascimento, Jane Huber, Sarah Fromm, and Josephine Watson in the 4x200
meter relay. Finally, both teams finished with their highest point
totals
ever: girls with 32 points, coming in seventh place, and boys with 49
points, earning a bronze team plaque, also the first in school history. |

Records Falling Weekly
January
16, 2011
The
Beacon track team has been on a hot streak lately, breaking three
school records in as many weeks. First, Josephine Watson bested a five
year old mark in the 300 meter dash at the PSAL Holiday Games. Next,
the 4x200 meter relay of Luisa Cardenas, Jane Huber, Laura Nascimiento,
and Josephine Watson set the new record in that event during the
Hispanic Games. Finally, the boys pulled their weight with Steven Shaw,
John Estrada, Tomas Piedrahita, and Lukas Chaya, setting a record of
their own in the sprint medley during the Martin Luther King Jr. Relays.

Congratulations
to the Beacon girls track team for their continued success in this
winter season. At the PSAL Day of Distance, the varsity girls of Sophie
Samuels, Luisa Cardenas, Celeste Royo, and Kali Villarosa placed 15th
out of 51 in the 4x800 meter relay, while running the fastest time for
our school in two years. In the freshman division, every Beacon member
won a medal. Dynahlee Padilla, Lauren Delgado, Laura Nascimiento, and
Jillian Solomon were 5th in the 4x800 and Jane Huber and Alexa Ringer
were 4th and 5th respectively in the long jump.

Start for Winter Track

The
Beacon track team, now in the winter season, has already shown great
success, starting with the annual Jim McKay Memorial meet. The freshman
girls of Jane Huber, Laura Nascimiento, Ariana Roman, and Catherine
Graves won first place in the 4x400 meter relay. In the varsity
division, Luisa Cardenas, Sarah Fromm, Sophie Samuels, and Kali
Villarosa placed third in the 4x800 relay. On the boys side, medal
winners included Steven Shaw in the long jump, and Lukas Chaya who took
gold and set a new school record in the boys 1000 meter run.

Congratulations
to the underclassmen on the cross country team who have had a stellar
stretch of success. First, freshman Reed Cohen broke the school record
again in the 1.5 mile course, further lowering his time to 9:10. Next,
freshman Sylvia Plaza broke the same school record, in the girls
division, while becoming the first girl in seven years to have a time
under 11 minutes. Finally, over the past week Beacon has earned three
team awards. The freshman girls and sophomore boys were third in
Manhattan, and the sophomore girls finished second in Manhattan.

The
Cross Country team has been off to nice start for their 2011 season.
The team features a strong core of senior veterans and a large handful
of new aspiring freshmen. The girls had their first varsity team race
this past Saturday, where they finished 5th out of 23 PSAL teams. Medal
winners included Luisa Cardenas, Sarah Fromm, and Kali Villarosa. The
boys team has already broken a school record, with Reed Cohen and
Marcus Kener both beating the old school mark for the 1.5-mile course
at van Cortlandt Park.

Team Performance Is Best in School History

Congratulations
to the track team for a historic finish at this year's Manhattan
Varsity Championships in outdoor track. First of all, four members
emerged as champions: Josephine Watson in the 400 meters, Ethan Buckman
in the 400 meter hurdles, Steven Shaw in the long jump and triple jump,
and Kenji Harada in the discus throw. Secondly, eight students set new
school records: Carina Elfving and Steven Shaw in the triple jump,
Mariah Apollon and Henry Teverow in the javelin, Kenji Harada in the
discus throw, Ethan Buckman in the 400 hurdles, Jesse Metres in the
steeplechase, and Mike Scher in the
800 meters. Finally, both teams finished with the highest point total
ever: girls with 45 points, coming in sixth place, and boys with 69
points, earning a bronze team plaque, also the first in school history.

Track Season Puts A Spring in Their Step

The
spring outdoor track season has begun and the team has wasted no time
putting up big performances. Firstly, Josephine Watson finished 4th
place overall in the city at the Mayor's Cup 400-meter run while tying
her own school record. Secondly, other new school records are being set
left and right. Senior captain Mike Scher is continuing his dominance
in the distance events, breaking the 3200 and 1600-meter records with
ease. Jumpers are getting into the mix too with Steven Shaw and Sophie
Samuels setting new marks in the triple jump. The team looks to do fine
tuning and make a great surge toward the championship on May 21.

to the Beacon Indoor Track team for a fine performance at Saturday's
Manhattan Varsity Championships. The meet crowned two champions:

Luther King Jr. Relays. Highlights included a new school record in the

earned them a silver medal. In the field events, Carina Elfving and

Congratulations to the
cross country team for another great performance at the Mayor's Cup
Championships. This annual meet features over 2000 runners from over
100 public, private, and Catholic schools from throughout the five
boroughs. In the girls division, the Junior Varsity finished 5th, which
is the best in school history. Medal winners were Carina Elfving,
Sophie Samuels, Natalie Doppstadt, and Lydia Dubois. The varsity girls
finished 11th and were lead by Luisa Cardenas.
On the boys side, the
varsity team finished 23rd overall, and was lead by Michael Scher, who
won a medal and set another new school record. |

Saturday's PSAL Manhattan Championships. Leading the day were our new

The
boys spring track team rose up to the challenge and set two new school records
this past Wednesday at JFK high school. The first record was in the 100
meter dash by Will Davis. The
second record was in the 4x400 meter relay by Mike Scher, Walker
Hudobenko, Hudson Sackrider-DeRicco, and Trey Bradley. Great job!

Records Fall on Boys Track

After
years of focus in the sprints, the boys track team is finally showing
some muscle in the distance events of outdoor track. First, senior
Walker Hudobenko broke the precipitously falling 3200 meter record,
lowering it to 11:29. Then, a week later, junior Mike Scher broke the
four-year old 1600 meter record, lowering it to 5:05. We can't wait to
see what's next!

was battling hard over the winter break at the Manhattan Championships.
Single medal winners were Gideon Rosenthal, and Kadeem Thompson. Double

The Beacon track team had another strong showing at the annual Martin
Luther King Jr. Invitational, which is a relay meet featuring all PSAL
track teams from all five boroughs of the city. Highlights included the
relay of Josephine Watson, Sarah Fromm, Luisa Cardenas, and Lily
Gellman who won the bronze medal in the sophomore girls sprint medley.
Excelling in the same event for the boys division, the relay of Gideon
Rosenthal, Matt Corwin, Jeremy Bernstein, and Jon Koonce set a new
school record.

Congratulations to the girls track team for winning a medal in each
race they entered at the PSAL's McKay Invitational. The varsity girls
team entered two squads in the 4x800 meter relay
and one squad in the 4x400 meter relay. Medal winners were Josephine
Watson, Lily Gellman, Anais Perrine, Natalie Doppstadt, Celeste Royo,
Jesse Metres, Isabel Shecter, Sarah Fromm, Luisa Cardenas, Sophie
Samuels, and Corby Ferlesch, who won back-to-back medals. For the
entire meet, the Beacon girls as a whole placed 9th out of 30 schools.
In the boys division, Beacon did not come away empty handed by any
means, as a new school record was set by Will Davis in the 300 meter

Finish Ever at City Championships

Congratulations to the
Girls J.V. Team for finishing 4th at the PSAL Championships this past
Saturday. The team was led by Celeste Royo and Lily Gellman, both of
whom also won individual medals. The fourth place finish is the highest
ever by the cross country team at any level, and it proves that Beacon
has one of the deepest squads in The City.

Historic Halloween for Cross Country

Curses and spells were
nowhere to be found as the Beacon cross country teams came away from
the Manhattan Championships with three historic performances. The
varsity boys placed third, led by Mike Scher and Walker Hudobenko. The
J.V. boys placed second, led by Jackson Evans and Dylan Turk. The J.V.
girls placed third, led by Johanna Frederick and Celeste Royo. All
three awards were the highest ever achieved by the respective teams.

breaking performances in the 3200 meter run. First, Chris Wilson broke
the record by running a 12:20 on April 7. Then yesterday, the record
was bested again by two different Beacon runners: Walker Hudobenko with

Mike Scher, both won the silver team award in their respective

The Beacon boys and
girls cross country teams were big winners at this past week's
Manhattan Grand Prix, collecting 13 total medals--the highest one-day
total in team history. The freshmen were led by Lily Gellman and Eliot
Turner, both of whom ran personal bests. The varsity teams, which are
once again in the championship hunt, were led by seniors Sasha Dunbar
and Spencer Hadel.

Where They Left off

The spring track team is having a strong start to the season despite
the harsh and inclement weather at our outdoor practices and meets. One
of the anticipated highlights of this season will be the Varsity boys
4x100 relay, which broke the school record twice last year. The relay
is showing signs of life again this year as they broke the record again
this past weekend at the Kings Relay Carnival. The relay included
Stevenson Jean-Charles, Henry Liebman, Kadeem Thompson, and Will Davis.

January 21, 2008
Congratulations to the
track team for another strong showing at the annual MLK Relays this
past Monday. New school records were set in the sprint medley event in
both the boys and the girls divisions. The boys squad included Alex
Schrum, Kadeem Thompson, Will Davis, and Spencer Hadel. The girls
relay, which consisted of Nzingha Crusoe, Kate Carlucci, Corby
Ferlesch, and Chelsea Davies, also finished tenth out of 54 varsity
teams from the PSAL. Crusoe and Davies also set additional records in
individual events at the annual NYC Mayor's Cup this past Saturday.

in full swing and the Beacon boys and girls teams are off to a nice
start. Led by our experienced upperclassmen, our runners have
accumulated 14 medals over the first two weeks of competition. Beacon
will be in championship contention come October despite having a small
team. The boys and girls are in action every Tuesday and Wednesday at
van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. Come check us out!

Sasha Dunbar (800 meters) and Nzingha Crusoe (400 m hurdles) both ran
record times at the PSAL Sophomore City Championships this past
Saturday. With her time Crusoe also qualifies for the varsity
championships this coming Sunday. Way to go, girls!

4x400 meter relay and, in so doing, qualified for the
PSAL City Championship next month as well.

the highest ever in school history. The team was lead by sophomores

Federation Cross Country Championship. This race will be held November
18 and it will feature 250 of the best runners from public, catholic,
and prep schools from all over New York State.

Boys Track Team for setting a new school record in the Sprint Medley
this past Saturday at the Kings Relays. The record was broken despite
inclement weather and adverse running conditions. The relay included
Isaac Lliguin, Desi Hernandez, Najua Ward, and Rolando Rodriguez.

the Girls Long Jump later during the week.

Win "Four on a Couch"
March 11, 2006
Congratulations to the
freshmen and sophomores for winning the classic memory game, "Four on a
Couch," this part Saturday night at the Winter Track Dinner. Both teams
battled valiently, racking their brains for names, but the defining
moment occurred when Naomi was finally called off the couch with a name
not used all night. Reports say that the move was illegally aided by
hand motions from a member of the winning team, although it has not yet
been confirmed. A brief scuffle ensued afterwards and fighting words
were exchanged as the upperclassmen were outraged, but fortunately no
casualties were sustained. |

Nzingha Crusoe in her 6th place finish in the 300m at the City Finals
this past Saturday. She is the fastest freshman girl in school history
and among the elite sprinters of New York City. |
Track Team Bound for
City Championships
February 21, 2006
Congratulations to the Beacon Track team in qualifying for the PSAL
Indoor Track Championships. Representing Beacon at this prestigious
race on Saturday will be Rolando Rodriguez, Freddy Ciriaco, Kyle
Wright, and Najua Ward in the 4x200m relay, and Nzingha Crusoe in the
300m and 600m run. These five students are the new school record
holders in their respective events, and together with medal-winners
Chelsea Davies and Sasha Dunbar, propelled Beacon to a 7th place
overall finish out of 17 schools on Monday's Manhattan Finals.

Session A Big Hit!

A full introductory Yoga
session given at school yesterday was received with excitement and
enthusiasm as the track team learned a wide array of exercises in
relaxtion, focus, and stretching. Special thanks to Linette Dunbar for
making it all possible!

Coach Pleased with
Runners' Report Cards

Coach Shum was very pleased on Wednesday after seeing countless numbers
of "A" and "B" grades on his runners' first semester report cards. The
team has long held a tradition of diligence, which extends from the
classroom onto the track. It is also reported that Shum especially
likes nerdy track runners because he too was a nerdy track runner back
in high school (about 3 years ago...)

Mayor's Cup Record

Congratulations to the Beacon Track Team for winning the Freshman Girls
Sprint Medley Relay at the Mayor's Cup Championship this past Saturday.
This latest victory was their third in as many weeks. The relay
consisting of Nzingha Crusoe, Chelsea Davies, Marne Bruckner, and Sasha
Dunbar, lead from start to finish in route to a record breaking
performance. Beacon handily defeated 12 other squads including teams
from top Catholic and Prep schools. Way to go team!

Beacon Freshmen Take
the Gold!

Congratulations to the Freshman Girls Track team and their continued
dominance. Their latest victory was again in decisive fashion as they
convincingly won the gold medal in the 4x800m relay at the Martin
Luther King Jr. Relays. The record-breaking squad included Sasha
Dunbar, Chelsea Davies, Marina Rada, and Nzingha Crusoe. These girls
are hands-down among the fastest freshmen in the city. |
